The Golf Course

The Golf Course

It’s not the best omen that dead bodies keep washing up at the shores of Trump National Golf Course.

Mr. Trump and his people have had consistent conflict with their employees, the city and local government — his massive flag, ficus hedge, late payment of taxes, labor violations, shooting gophers with guns — which indicates larger issues: laws need to be enforced, and applied equally to all. Trump has gotten a pass from RPV (and everyone else) because he’s a wacky, crazy celebrity who’s on TV. Trump National even lies about their charity donations.

Just to add a little spice to the mix, Trump National hosts far-right figures for speeches and fundraisers, who see the club as their natural home. It’s hosted Joe Arapio, Omar Navarro – and of course Trump’s own administration. In the April 2019 visit, Stephen Miller and tycoon Rupert Murdoch were spotted. Protesters have taken note of this and regularly demonstrate at the property, turning a once-quiet community into a carnival sideshow.

Mr. Trump’s been bankrupt six times. He frequently pays cash on transactions because he’s not seen as trustworthy — a notorious late payer. This is a person who claims to be a billionaire, but stiffs the PVPUSD school district for a mere $7500. He’s also famously litigious and has literally hundreds of lawsuits in progress. A lawyer based at the club paid off his mistress.

You don’t get to pay your property taxes late. You don’t get to violate community standards. You don’t get to wave guns around on your property. And neither should Mr. Trump and his staff.  Why are they allowed to get away with so much? Despite repeated, consistent violations the Trump organization has never been fined once. Trump National even lies about their charity donations.

Questions:
– Who alerted Mr. Trump that the RPV course was up for sale? Why did Credit Suisse think a guy with multiple bankruptcies was a good choice?
– How did he get an alleged $27 million to buy the golf course in RPV? Who are his backers, his co-funders that gave $260 million to fix it up?
– Does Trump National consistently provide any tax revenue to RPV at all? The business pays taxes late and appears to have lost money in a number of years. Other Trump golf courses (Turnberry) are losing money in a spectacular fashion.
– How much in donations has the Trump Organization given to RPV City Council members?
– How many years did the city of RPV give Mr. Trump an extension to run his course?
– Why does Mr. Trump claim the course is worth $10 million on his tax forms? If you undervalued your property you’d face fines and court time.
– RPV settled Mr. Trump’s four year lawsuit against the city in 2012, after a new City Council was elected with pockets full of Trump donations. The terms are secret from the public. What’s to hide?
– Employees sued and won a nearly half-million labor dispute against Trump National. Are these abuses continuing?
– How many years have sub-committee meetings of the City Council been held at Trump National? These may not count as ’emoluments’ (foreign gifts) but certainly could be seen as bribes.

Mr. Trump & his organization don’t follow rules, bring far-right extremists (and protesters), sue the school district and city, abuse employees, and pay taxes late or not at all. What benefit does Trump National bring to The Hill, exactly?

It would be lovely if journalists at the PV News, Daily Breeze, LA Times actually did their jobs.  Certainly it’s a tough time for reporting right with newspaper budgets (particularly local news) going out of business. And watching local politics can be the definition of dull. But it’s a pretty relevant story worth the effort to research.
